>More in the Jesus Wept category… How can someone get to third year of a psychology degree and be so dim?

A 21-year-old university student has been crowned Miss Universe Australia after proposing people should use less hairspray to help the environment.

Her hairspray reduction idea topped a plethora of environmentally sensitive ideas including turning people’s water off every other day, charging $20/l for petrol and building houses out of plastic instead of wood in order to save the forests. One hopeful even put forward the plan to only allow one piece of toilet paper. When told that it had already been suggested she cried.

Laura Dundovic, a third-year psychology student from Sydney, received the honour in Melbourne last night. “It would be great to reach the success of my predecessors, but at the moment I am the over the moon to be here,” The Herald Sun quoted her as saying. The event’s director, Deborah Miller, said the standard of competition was one of the highest ever, with all contestants having “charisma, beauty, and intelligence”.

I don’t know if it was ‘intelligence’ or something that resembled intelligence and so they got a pass.

Tact was perhaps a little less evident in some of the beauty queen hopefuls. One contestant said the lives of homeless people could be improved if more of them used helplines.

And you thought I was kidding when I said she beat out a number of other hopeless ideas…

Ms Dundovic beat 28 other young women to the title, which was the start of great things for Jennifer Hawkins, who won in 2004. Ms Hawkins went on to win the international title, Miss Universe. A multi-million-dollar contract as the face of Myer and a job in television followed. Ms Dundovic will represent Australia in the international final in Vietnam in July.

Good luck to her. She’ll be up against some serious environmental competition though she’ll need to change her line, as I don’t think that Vietnamese judges will know what hairspray is.

    >Use less hairspray so as to use less CFC’s…. – obviously a psychology degree doesn’t require too much intelligence…

    >Hi Jack,Unless there is a reality TV show of “Australia’s Next Miss Universe” we may never know the truth. But given the enviro proposals she beat, perhaps Ms Dundovic is indeed a clever psychologist-in-the-making ?Can’t you just picture them all sitting around the Big Sister House in their trackie dacks and uggies brainstorming ideas on how to make the world a better place ?Let’s not waste time on Lomborgian concepts like clean water, sanitation, literacy and micro-nutrition. Let’s come up with concepts that will have immediate appeal to Wanna-be fashion princesses like rationing toilet paper to one sheet – ( per what – unit of excrement, time period – who knows ? ) !!The glass half empty view may say that Ms Dundovic is the least vacant of the airheads. Or the glass half full view would be that given all the mentioned proposals are so utterly ridiculous – maybe she read the signs of where the whole trainwreck was heading and came up with a consistent theme that she could laugh off in later years as being ‘something’ to do with a less-than informed view on CFCs ?Whereas if the toilet paper Affluenza boosters ever presented to me for a job interview, I would probably be inclined to suggest they would be better suited to a career stream involving nightime entertainment, loud music, flashy lights and twirling around brass poles ;-)So the jury is still out as to whether Ms Dundovic can or ever will displace Our Jen ( sigh – Voted girl that every guy WANTS to take home to meet his parents !! )

    >Dear Anon E-mouseI indeed agree with you in that I suspect that Ms Dundovic may have been the light of cunning reason amongst a sea of peroxide future reality TV show hostesses.Unfortunately I also suspect she is not going to allow an aging sceptic the pleasure of her company in convivial surroundings ( candlelight, linen tableclothes , fine wine, good food, attentive but not intrusive service ) such as one might be able to prove the hypothesis one way or the other. So…back to Project Jennifer Hawkins in the meantime 😉

    >Okay, as someone who has been in class with her at uni I can safely say that she is a smart girl. She always has something intelligent to say in discussions and the hairspray thing was obviously a joke. You guys are just speaking from the perspective of the stereotype that beautiful people are dumb. Open your minds a little.

    >Okay Anon E-mouse,Irony is an absolute bitch to do on the ‘net.Explicitly then and stripped of any humourous intent for web posterity…NO DISRESPECT is intended or implied to Ms Dundovic. Given what she appears to have been surrounded by, I agree that her answer is clever and I am sure she is a smart young lady. I am the proud father of three daughters who are frighteningly clever at times, so thanks for the injunction to open my mind but frankly I for one don’t believed it is closed in the first place. One simply cannot convey humour in a blog that is obvious to all readers versus the nod-and-wink of facial expression.I wish Ms Dundovic great things in her life.
